About Dr. Hodge
He Didn't Set Out to Study Loneliness. Loneliness Found Him.
Dr. Harlan B. Hodge is a researcher, speaker, and outdoor advocate whose life's work sits at the intersection of social science, mental health, and the transformative power of getting outside.
The Origin Story
From Isolated to Obsessed With Togetherness
Dr. Hodge grew up in a mid-sized Midwestern city where, by every outward measure, he had everything he needed. Good school. Stable home. Plenty of screens. And a creeping, persistent sense that something was missing — that despite being surrounded by people, he was profoundly alone.
It wasn't until a high school teacher dragged his class on a weekend hiking trip that something shifted. Not the hiking itself — the being there with other people, moving through the same hard terrain, sharing the same tired legs and the same ridiculous sense of accomplishment at the top. He'd never felt less alone.
That experience didn't just change his weekend plans. It changed the entire direction of his life.
The Research
Twenty Years of Asking Why It Works
Dr. Hodge spent the next two decades trying to understand what happened on that hillside — and how to replicate it at scale. He earned his doctorate in social psychology, with a dissertation on the role of shared physical challenge in accelerating interpersonal trust and reducing loneliness markers in adolescent populations.
His subsequent research has been published in leading journals of social psychology, public health, and education. He has studied outdoor connection programs across four continents, worked with school districts serving over 200,000 students, and consulted with national youth organizations on evidence-based approaches to combating the loneliness epidemic.
The finding that keeps showing up, across every study and every population: when people move through the natural world together, something ancient and essential activates. The barriers come down. The connections form. The loneliness recedes.

The Philosophy
Simple Enough to Be True
"The cure for loneliness isn't complicated. It's a door, a trail, and another person willing to walk it with you."
Dr. Hodge is not interested in complexity for its own sake. His work is grounded in a simple, evidence-backed conviction: human beings are wired for connection, and that wiring activates most reliably when we're moving through the physical world together. Everything he builds — every keynote, every workshop, every campus program — is designed to create the conditions for that activation.
